  Dutch, as he was better known as, came to UND from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin to play football and obtain a degree in education. He competed successfully in three sports as a football quarterback and fullback, a defenseman in hockey and a javelin thrower in track. During his football career the Sioux won 23 of 27 games, won two North Central Conference championships and was widely popular in North Dakota. Besides football he was a standout hockey player, in 1932-33 and 1935-36. Leidholdt was selected as a member of the All league team in the old States-Dominion Hockey League in 1936-37, an honor he deserved. He also competed in the javelin throw and in 1935 and 1937 he was on the team that won the North Central Conference championship.
