King lettered four times in football at UND,1945-46-47-48. As a senior in 1948 he served as a team captain, nominated for the Blue-Gray All Star Game at linebacker, was a First Team All-North Central Conference selection at center and was named to Montana State University's All-Opponent team. He is a native of Cando, N.D., and the first ever UND Honor Athlete of the Year winner. He belonged to the Blue Key Society, the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and served as president of the newly formed Varsity Letterman's Club. King began his legendary coaching career in 1949, when he guided the UND freshman football team. After graduating in 1950, he coached numerous teams all over the U.S.
