In a brief two-year career at UND, Halpenny, a native of Winnipeg, was a two-time All-American and the North Central Conference Swimmer of the Year for 1986 and 1987. He won six NCC individual titles in three events and was on four conference champion relay teams. In addition to his performance in the pool, Halpenny also earned All-America honors in the classroom. Following his competitive career he turned to coach for UND.
