A four-time North Central Conference champion in the 100 and 200 backstroke events, Haase was the first Fighting Sioux male All-American and was named the NCC Rookie of the Year in 1986 and NCC Swimmer of the Year in 1989. He earned a total of 11 All-American awards and nine NCC championships on his way to holding six UND and four NCC records. He was part of the start of the dynasty now known as the Fighting Sioux men's swimming and diving program. Haase was killed in a biking accident in 1994 in India and the Mike Haase Memorial Scholarship Fund has been created in his honor.
