John (Gino) Gasparini

Gasparini played forward on the Sioux hockey team. He lettered four years, and even served as team captain his senior year. After college hockey he had a short pro career in Los Angeles and Toledo. Gasparini decided to go back to UND for his master's, and while studying he became the assistant hockey coach. Then in 1978 he became head hockey coach. His teams won three national NCAA Division I championships in 1980, 1982, and 1987. In addition they won four Western Collegiate Hockey Assn. Titles including 1978-82, and 1987. Ten of his players have been named All American's and sent 35 players into pro hockey. Gasparini was honored as 1986-87 National Coach of the Year by his peers in the American Hockey Coaches Assn., and named WCHA Coach of the year three times and North Dakota College Coach of the Year several times. His coaching record was an impressive 257-111-11 in nine seasons, making him one of the winningest coaches at UND. After coaching in 1984 he was named UND's Athletic Director.
