Gunther came from Wayne (Neb.) State College, to UND as head basketball coach. He headed into his 18th season with a 318-163 coaching record, tying him with Clem Letich's length of service. Under Gunther's expert coaching his teams have won five North Central Conference championships and four NCAA Division II regional titles. Before he started coaching he played basketball at the University of Iowa, where he left many records that are still standing. After college he played pro basketball for four years with the Detroit Pistons, Cleveland, San Francisco and other Eastern teams. During his coaching career he was named NCAA District Coach of the Year in 1974-75 and 1981-82 plus earning North Dakota's College Coach of the Year and in 1984 he received the Merit Award from the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
