A native of Vancouver, B.C., Taylor is a 1980 graduate of UND with a B.S.B.A. He was a four-year letterwinner (1977-78-79-80) as a forward for the Sioux hockey team and was a member of UND's third NCAA championship team in 1970-80. Taylor left UND as the school's all-time leading scorer with 97 goals and 168 assists for 265 points in 157 games. He held this record until Greg Johnson broke the record years later. Taylor was a first-team All-American and national college player of the year in 1980, in addition to being UND's Athlete of the Year and a member of the 1979 WCHA all-academic team. Taylor went to play for Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Washington during a four-year career in the National Hockey League. He also spent three years in the American Hockey League and five years playing in Europe.
