Gulseth started his career at Minnesota, but transferred to UND after his freshman season. He had earned All North Central Conference first team honors twice as an offensive lineman at UND. A three-year letterwinner, he led the Fighting Sioux to an 8-1 record in 1964. Playing both offense and defense, he made a contribution as a sophomore in 1962, earned all-league honors as a guard and switched back to tackle his senior year in 1964, earning All-NCC for the second time. After his college career was over Gulseth went on to play for Providence in the Continental Football League in 1965, which earned him a tryout with the Chicago Bears of the National Football League. After he was released, Gulseth played with the Brooklyn Dodgers of the Continental Football League and then caught on with the Denver Broncos of the American Football League as a linebacker during the 1966 season.
