Gehrke was a walk-on football guard from Crosby, N.D. In 1931 he was a member of the freshman squad and moved his way up to earn varsity letters in 1932, 1933 and 1934. Along with earning varsity letters he was selected as an All North Central Conference guard two years. Gehrke also lettered in boxing during the 1934-35 season. He earned the RUUD Scholarship and was a member of the Blue Key Society. In 1935 Gehrke graduated from UND's School of Commerce with a major is business.
