Fennell, a native of Edmonton, was a standout defensive tackle for the Sioux 1971-73. He was named to the All North Central Conference team in 1973 and many believe he merited selection to that honor team all three seasons. Passing up his final year of eligibility he decided to turn pro with the Edmonton Eskimos. Fennell played on the Sioux team under Head Coach Jerry Olson that had a combined 22-8-1 record. After playing 10 seasons with the Eskimos he retired as of the all-time great defensive lineman. He was also a recipient of many Canadian pro honors including the prestigious Schenley Award, given to the top Canadian pro lineman, and a CFL all pro several time and team MVP.
