A three-year letterwinner as a quarterback and safety, Murphy was team captain and an all-conference honorable mention selection in 1962. At quarterback he passed for 716 career yards and eight career touchdowns. He graduated with a degree in 1963 with degrees in Social Studies and Physical Education. In 1964 Murphy earned his master's degree in Physical Education and one in secondary administration in 1976. After graduating he served as an assistant coach with the UND football team for 12 seasons. He was named head coach in 1978, and in 1979, led the Sioux to the North Central Conference Championship and the NCAA playoffs with a 10-2 record. As head coach at UND Murphy compiled a 15-7 overall record. In 1985, Murphy was awarded the Thomas J. Clifford Award for success in coaching at the collegiate level.
