A native of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Smail earned three letters at UND as a member of the Fighting Sioux hockey team from 1977-80. A highlight of his career at UND was helping the Sioux win the Division I hockey Championship in 1980 while earning tournament MVP honors in the process. Smail was also named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team in 1980. After college he was signed as a free agent by the Winnipeg Jets Team in 1980. He enjoyed a 13-year career in the National Hockey League playing for Winnipeg from 1980-90, Minnesota, (1990-91) Quebec, (1991-92) and Ottawa, (1992-93). Smail finished his professional hockey career after playing two seasons in Europe.
