He returned to serve as team captain in 1966 and helped lead the Sioux to an 8-2 record, a tie for the NCC Championship and a berth in the Pecan Bowl under Head Coach Marv Helling. Along the way, Porinsh scored a school record of 20 touchdowns and finished ninth in the nation in Division II in scoring. Before coming to UND, Porinsh was an all-conference selection and third team All-America selection at Williston (ND) High. Porinsh went on to try out with the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League in 1967. He returned to the UND campus that fall and coached the Sioux defensive backs. He spent the next five years in graduate school and the military. Porinsh earned his master's degree in counseling in education in 1972.
