Davies, a native of Grand Forks, was an outstanding campus student leader, active in ROTC and record-setting track and field performer. He lettered four years in track, 1923-26 and was and outstanding sprinter where he set UND records in the 100-yard dash of 10 seconds flat in 1925 and the 220 yard dash. His records remained unbroken for several seasons into the 1930's. He fancied himself a possible football player and reported to the then head football coach Davis for a suit. He told Davies, "Young man if you want to finish school healthy do not bother trying to play college football." After watching them work, Davies was glad he was never given a suit.
