LeClair came to UND after playing football at University of Minnesota at Crookston for two years, where he established himself as an emerging star as a linebacker. While playing for the Sioux under Jerry Olson, he earned All American honors both years, twice was named to the All North Central Conference team, twice was UND's Most Valuable Player and was also named Most Valuable Defensive Lineman in the conference. After finishing his Sioux career he was drafted third round by the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League, where he played for 13 seasons. LeClair earned all pro honors in 1976 and was named Cincinnati's MVP in 1975 and 1980. He finished his career with the New Jersey Generals of the USFL in 1984, also earning All Pro honors in that new league.
