A multi-sport athlete, Peterson was a standout field hockey player. She was a two-time all-conference pick and was named to the North Central Region team in addition to being a three-time most valuable player. Following her playing career, Peterson coached UND and was named the 1981 Female College Coach of the Year by the North Dakota AP Sportswriters Association. UND finished sixth nationally in 1980 and was a regional semifinalist in 1977, 1979 and 1981.
