Finnegan came to UND from Bismarck, N.D., and became a standout basketball player on the Sioux teams that won three straight North Central Conference championships, 1934-37. His three teams complied a 51 and 6 record, with a winning percentage that comes just under 90 percent. He was also named to the All-NCC basketball team twice, and served as co-captain during his senior season. Following his college career he played with a semi-pro team, the Bismarck Phantoms in 1939-41 and named to the All America teams.
