Mackenroth played UND football in the depths of the big depression. He lettered as a Sioux tackle and center in 1935-37 in the days when players went two ways-- offense and defense. Twice he was named to the All North Central Conference team and served as UND co-captain in 1937. Besides being a football star, he also won a letter on UND's first wrestling team in 1936-37. After finishing his Sioux career Mackenroth signed and played with the pro Detroit Lions in 1938. Later he came back to UND and assisted the late Head Football Coach and Athletic Director, C.A. (Jack) West as line coach.
