A center, he lettered for three years 1936-37-38 and was an All-North Central Conference selection two times, 1937 and 1938, helping lead the Sioux to two NCC championships in 1936 and 1937. He was coached by his father, the late C. A. "Jack" West. He played on some great UND teams that won 9 of 11 games in 1936, had a 5-3-0 record in 1937, which included a 10-8 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and a 14-13 win over the nationally ranked Detroit University at Detroit and a 6-2-0 record in 1938. He also recorded four shutouts and averaging 6.4 points a game and served as co-captain his senior year.
