Jones, a Winnipeg native, was a star running back for the Fighting Sioux football team from 1979-81, earning All-America honors in 1980 and 1981. He was a team captain in '81 and topped the 1,000-yard plateau in rushing in '80 and '81 to earn All-NCC accolades. Jones ranked third on the UND career rushing list and can be found in the top ten in numerous other rushing categories. He considers a 1980 victory over North Dakota State --in which he ran for 233 yards on 24 carries --to be his most memorable game at UND. After leaving UND, Jones went on to a distinguished career as a fullback in the Canadian Football League, with stints in Winnipeg, Edmonton and Saskatchewan. A fan-favorite wherever he played, Jones was named the game's Most Valuable Player after winning the 1987 Grey Cup with Edmonton and was a captain of the Saskatchewan squad that won the Grey Cup in 1989. He rushed for 4,582 yards and 60 touchdowns while averaging 5.2 yards per carry in his 11-year pro career and was the CFL's leading active rusher at the time of his retirement. He recorded another 3,185 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns on 295 receptions. Jones ranked second on Saskatchewan's all-time rushing list, and his four touchdowns in 1988 game against Winnipeg is the highest such total in the franchise's 86-year history.
