University of North Dakota Athletics

  Engel from New Holstein, Wisconsin, was an outstanding basketball player, and enjoyed great success as an guard on Sioux teams three season, 1948-51 and served as team captain in 1950-51. He started at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, but decided that UND offered him a greater chance of playing time. Fritz was an excellent all-around player, widely known for his great scoring from long range. He was named to the All NCC team his junior and senior seasons. He ranked 16th on the list of all-time UND basketball scorers, amassed 931 points in his three years Sioux season, most of which was in his last season.
