McLean played on the Fighting Sioux hockey team from 1961-63. In 1962 he scored a team-high of 19 goals and 19 assists for a team high of 38 points his second season and during his senior year he tailed a team-high of 34 assists and led the team with 54 points. He was named a first-team All-American and selected to the All-WCHA second team in 1963. McLean was part of the 1963 NCAA Championship team that earned him NCAA Tournament MVP that same year. Throughout his four seasons he scored 91 career points as a Sioux.
