AMES, Iowa – The University of North Dakota soccer team fell, 4-0, to Iowa State on Sunday afternoon from the Cyclone Sports Complex in Ames, Iowa.
UND (5-3-0) battled hard against Iowa State (2-1-2), but a pair of goals just 19 seconds apart in the first half put the hosts ahead for good.
It was Iowa State who got on the board first, as Regan John finished off a nice passing play with a strike into the top corner to give the hosts a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute. Just seconds later, the Cyclones doubled their advantage on a penalty kick goal from Ella Zimmerman to make it 2-0 ISU.
North Dakota put together some strong chances as the half wore on, highlighted by a
Paula Moreno Diaz free kick into the box that just missed falling to a black jersey and
Jessica Machovec nearly chipping the ball over both the goaltender and the defender, but it was a 2-0 lead for ISU at the halftime break.
UND came out firing to begin the second half, with Machovec nearly cutting into the deficit just minutes into the stanza with a shot that looked to be headed into the net but was thwarted by the ISU goalkeeper to keep the lead at 2-0.
The Cyclones took advantage a few moments later, as the hosts were awarded another penalty kick for a foul in the box, and converted once again to make it a 3-0 lead just over five minutes into the second half.
North Dakota pushed hard to get on the board, but ISU added a fourth goal in the 77th minute to secure the victory.
The Fighting Hawks will be back in action on Thursday night for a showdown at Boise State.
