SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Following an impressive indoor season, North Dakota thrower
Kenna Curry was named the Summit League Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced Thursday. It marks her second season winning the award, also earning the title last indoor season.
Curry became a Second Team All-American at the NCAA Indoor Championships and took 10th in the weight throw with a toss of 71-5 1/2 (21.78m). With her finish, she became the first Fighting Hawk in UND's Division I history to partake in back-to-back NCAA Indoor Championships, also finishing 14th in the weight throw and picking up Second Team All-America status with a mark of 67-3 1/2 (20.51m) last season. She is just the third NoDak student-athlete to compete at the meet in a field event in UND's Division I history.
The Elk Point, S.D., native, entered the meet with the No. 6 weight throw mark nationally. Her school-record throw of 75-0 1/2 (22.87m) at the East Coast Invitational this February qualified her for the meet and broke the previous program record distance of 72-1 3/4 (21.99m), set by Molli Detloff at the 2019 Summit League Indoor Championships.
At the Summit League Indoor Championships, Curry had a pair of All-Summit League performances and won the titles in both the weight throw (70-6 1/4, 21.49m) and shot put (50-3 1/2, 15.33m). At the conclusion of the meet, she was named the Field Championship M.V.P.
Curry owns the indoor school records in both the weight throw (75-0 1/2, 22.87m) and shot put (52-0, 15.85m). During the regular season, she captured six weight throw titles and four shot put crowns. She was also named the Kwik Star Summit League Women's Field Peak Performer of the Week five times.
North Dakota will continue its outdoor season next week at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic (April 3-5), Stanford Invitational (April 4-5) and USD Early Bird (April 4-5).
