Hawks show dominance while shattering records at UND Tune-Up

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota wrapped up the regular season on Friday by hosting the UND Tune-Up at the Pollard Athletic Center and came away with four school records and a tied program record. The Fighting Hawks also piled up 14 event wins and put down 16 improvements on the UND top-10 list.

Jiri Ceska broke the 800-meter school record and won the title with a time of 1:48.57. He broke the record of Alec Nelson, who set it at 1:49.83 at the 2024 David Hemery Valentine Invitational. With the PR, Ceska now leads the Summit League in the event and edges out Mason Sindelar of South Dakota, who had a League-leading time of 1:49.34 coming into the day. Ceska's time also broke the UND Tune-Up meet record time of 1:53.25, set by Josh Samyn of North Dakota State in 2021.

Brooklyn Brouse captured the women's 800-meter title in 2:12.60 to complete the 800-meter sweep for UND. Her time also broke the previous UND Tune-Up meet record time of 2:13.68, set by Josie Hermann of Concordia-Moorhead in 2021.

The Fighting Hawks also swept both crowns in the rarely contested 300 meters and broke both UND records. Jerzie Finstad helped get the record-breaking started, winning the women's 300-meter title with a time of 38.17. She bettered her previous record of 39.75, which she set at the 2023 UND Open.

Jory Vasek finished the sweep and won the men's 300-meter title, clocking a time of 34.09. He broke the record of Norm McGee, who set it at 34.18 at the 1987 North Central Conference Indoor Championships. He also improved the Pollard Athletic Center facility record time of 35.07, which he set at the 2023 UND Open. Later in the meet, Vasek also won the 200-meter crown in a PR of 21.88, good for the No. 3 time on the UND top-10 list.

Along with the 300-meter records, UND continued rearranging the 300-meter top-10 list after Vasek's record. P.K. Moore posted the No. 3 time in school history in 34.79, followed by Maverick Kneefe in 35.09 (No. 4), Henry Nelson in 35.43 (No. 5) and Josh Neil in 36.10 (No. 10).

Malene Kollberg shattered the program record in the women's long jump and was the runner-up with a leap of 19-11 1/2 (6.08m). She broke the record of Tiffanie Magnusson, who set it at 19-7 1/2 (5.98m) at the 2023 Summit League Indoor Championships. Later on, Kollberg also improved her No. 4 time on the UND top-10 list in the women's 60-meter hurdles final with a time of 8.65.

Also in the women's 60-meter hurdles, Marta Marksa tied the school record during prelims with a personal-best time of 8.51. She now ties Erin Brown for the record, who ran an 8.51 at the 2020 Summit League Indoor Championships. Marksa was the runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles final and had a time of 8.55. Earlier, Marksa climbed to No. 4 in school history in the women's long jump with a PR leap of 18-11 3/4 (5.78m).

Eve Goldstein won one of the first titles for North Dakota at the meet and was victorious in the women's weight throw with a toss of 57-4 3/4 (17.49m). She was also the runner-up in the shot put and had a PR mark of 48-9 (14.86m), good for No. 4 on the UND top-10 list.

The Hawks swept the shot put titles. Kenna Curry won the women's title with a distance of 50-7 1/4 (15.42m) and Ethan Thomas claimed the crown in the men's section with a throw of 57-10 1/4 (17.63m).

Carter Byron completed the throwing dominance for the Fighting Hawks and earned the title in the men's weight throw with a mark of 57-0 3/4 (17.39m).

Back on the track, the women's 60-meter final was one of the closest finishes of the afternoon. Porsha Miles (7.654) edged out teammate Nadia Evans (7.659) for the title. Miles moved up to No. 3 on the UND top-10 list with her PR.

The pair also battled it out for the women's 200-meter crown. Evans got the better of Miles in this race, winning it in 24.40. Miles still clocked a personal-best time of 25.14, which improved her No. 9 time in UND history.

Olivia Correale earned the victory in the women's mile with a PR time of 4:54.46 and moved up to No. 8 on the UND top-10 list.

In the men's 60-meter final, Cruz Megazzini got the victory with a personal-best time of 7.09.

Gabrielle Wahl won one of the final titles of the day for the Fighting Hawks and was the winner in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:31.20.

North Dakota will now turn its attention to the Summit League Indoor Championships in Brookings this Friday and Saturday.
