North Dakota breaks records in Boston and Brookings

| By:
BOSTON, Mass./ BROOKINGS, S.D. – North Dakota's throwers and distance runners split up and a school record fell in each location that UND competed on Friday, with Matej Hrebacka breaking a program record in Boston and Kenna Curry improving her own record in Brookings. In total, the Fighting Hawks ended the day with a pair of school records, two event titles, placed eight times and posted six upgrades to the UND top-10 lists.

Hrebacka set a new school record in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:03.05 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational. He broke the record of Luke Labatte, who set it at 8:08.54 at the 2023 David Hemery Valentine Invitational. With his PR, Hrebacka now leads the Summit League in the event and currently edges out Cody Larson of South Dakota State, who had a League-leading time of 8:05.54 coming into the day.

Curry claimed the shot put invitational crown at the SDSU Indoor Classic with a toss of 52-0 (15.85m). She bettered her previous record of 51-8 1/4 (15.75m), which she set at the Bison Team Cup in Fargo last month. Curry currently leads the Summit League in the event by more than three feet.

Ethan Thomas was also victorious in Brookings and won the men's shot put invitational title with a throw of 58-9 1/4 (17.91m). Later in the meet, Thomas took third in the invitational weight throw and moved up to No. 3 in school history with a mark of 62-4 (19.00m).

Along with Curry's record-breaking throw to win the women's invitational shot put, two additional Hawks placed in the event. Eve Goldstein finished third with a toss of 47-5 3/4 (14.47m), while Julia Matthews placed sixth with a distance of 44-9 (13.64m).

Later in the meet, a pair of UND throwers also placed in the women's invitational weight throw. Matthews took fourth (59-5 3/4, 18.13m) and Kaylynn Red Tomahawk was eighth (53-2 3/4, 16.22m).

Towards the end of the day in Brookings, Jonas Weschle ran a time of 14:48.98 in the 5,000 meters. That time currently sits No. 8 on the UND top-10 list.

Earlier in the day, two Hawks posted upgrades to the UND top-10 list in Boston. Aleksa Milanovic clocked a time of 1:53.09 in the 800 meters and moved onto the UND top-10 list with the No. 9 time in program history. Henrik Lindstrot added his name to the list in the mile with a time of 4:11.98, which was good for the No. 10 time in school history.

Tanner Schiller had an impressive performance in Brookings in the 800 meters and finished with a time of 1:54.55, which came 0.35 seconds away from making the UND top-10 list. Coming into the day, his time would have ranked No. 10 in school history before Milanovic's PR in Boston.

North Dakota will resume competition at both the David Hemery Valentine Invitational and SDSU Indoor Classic on Saturday. Live results for both meets can be found on FightingHawks.com.
