Fighting Hawks shine at UND Open

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota hosted the UND Open on Saturday and finished the day with 18 event wins, three school records, three meet records and one facility record. The Fighting Hawks also posted 20 improvements to the UND top-10 lists.

Jadyn Keeler won the women's mile and broke the school record in the process with a time of 4:44.03. She broke the record of Yonca Kutluk, who set it at 4:46.72 at the 2024 Summit League Indoor Championships. Keeler's time also shattered the Pollard Athletic Center facility record of 4:45.60 set by Jennie Baragar-Petrash, an unattached athlete from North Dakota State at the 2021 UND Tune-Up and the UND Open meet record of 4:56.48, set by Hannah Oscarson of North Dakota in 2020.

Eliana Malnourie, the runner-up in the women's mile, also climbed the UND top-10 list and is now No. 4 in school history with her time of 4:50.50. Malnourie's time would have also beat the previous facility record and the UND Open meet record.

Jerzie Finstad broke the program record and meet record in the 800 meters. Finstad edged out the school record with a time of 2:10.16 and beat the previous record of Jessica Schill, who set it at 2:10.18 at the 2004 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships. Finstad's record also shattered the UND Open meet record time of 2:14.97, which was set by Tori Glazier of South Dakota State in 2023.

Ethan Kimmel also earned a program record in the 1,000 meters. Kimmel won the title in 2:27.72 and edged out the previous record of 2:27.82, set by Aaron Berndt at the 2001 NDSU Invitational. Kimmel was trailed by Aleksa Milanovic, who finished as the runner-up and posted the No. 4 time in school history with a time of 2:27.99.

Matej Hrebacka was victorious in the mile with a time of 4:08.13, which now ranks No. 3 in school history. He now owns the UND Open meet record with his time and bettered the previous record time of 4:09.29, which was set by Munir Isahak of Lake Effect in 2023.

Ethan Thomas, the winner of the men's discus on Friday night, captured a pair of titles on Saturday. He improved his No. 5 throw on the UND top-10 list in the weight throw and took the title with a toss of 60-2 1/2 (18.35m). He was also victorious in the shot put with a throw of 58-3 1/4 (17.76m).

Kenna Curry, who was the winner of the women's discus on Friday, finished the meet with a pair of titles, also earning the crown in the weight throw with a mark of 66-5 1/4 (20.25m).

Eve Goldstein was the final UND thrower to earn a title at the meet and completed the Fighting Hawk sweep of all the throw titles at the UND Open, winning the shot put with a distance of 47-3 (14.40m).

The NoDak jump squad also impressed at the meet and picked up four titles.

Shane Zierden shined in the men's triple jump and posted the No. 2 leap in school history with a mark of 48-9 (14.86m) to claim the title. Trenton Hanseder also moved onto the UND top-10 list in the triple jump with a leap of 44-6 (13.56m), which is now the No. 9 jump in program history. Earlier in the meet, Hanseder won the long jump with a jump of 22-7 (6.88m).

Tiffanie Magnusson earned the women's long jump crown with a leap of 19-5 1/4 (5.92m).

Anya Williams was victorious in the women's high jump with a height of 5-3 (1.60m).

In the men's high jump, James Weninger was the runner-up and had the No. 5 clearance in school history (6-8 3/4, 2.05m).

Both of the pole vault crowns also went to the Fighting Hawks. Adam Nychporuk captured the title in the men's section with a height of 15-3 (4.65m), while Emily Ash was victorious in the women's section with a clearance of 11-9 3/4 (3.60m).

In the rarely contested women's 300 meters, Porsha Miles posted the No. 2 time in school history and won with a time of 40.30. Miles was trailed by Marta Marksa in second (40.39) and Kimberly Hitchen in third (40.64), which now rank as the No. 3 and No. 4 times on the UND top-10 list, respectively.

The Hawks also rearranged the UND top-10 list in the men's 300 meters, with Maverick Kneefe recording the No. 3 time in school history and winning in 35.48. P.K. Moore was the runner-up in 35.51 and Henry Nelson took third in 35.55. Moore's time currently sits No. 5 in the event in program history, while Nelson's time is No. 6.

Tanner Schiller was the winner of the 600 meters with a time of 1:22.48, good for the No. 6 time on the UND top-10 list.

Towards the end of the meet, Nadia Evans won the 200 meter title with a time of 24.15 and improved her No. 3 mark on the UND top-10 list. Earlier, she also upgraded her No. 2 time in program history in the 60-meter final with a time of 7.63 and finished second.

Jory Vasek was the runner-up in the 400 meters and had the No. 3 time in UND history with a time of 48.56.

The Fighting Hawks will visit Fargo for the Bison Open this Friday and Saturday.

* The Fighting Hawks ran away with both team titles. The UND women won with 286 points and the next closest team was Mary with 115 points. The North Dakota men were victorious with 219.5 points, trailed by Mary with 130.5 points.
