NOTES: UND Hosts Omaha in First Home Game of 2022

QUICK JUMPERS

* North Dakota returns to the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center to host Nebraska-Omaha with an overall record of 6-8 and a 0-3 conference record.

The North Dakota Fighting Hawks return to the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center to host the Omaha Mavericks. Opening tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 6.

 

LAST TIME OUT

The University of North Dakota fell to South Dakota State, 54-72. The Fighting Hawks took the lead early with a bucket from Melissa Leet. The Jackrabbits hit their first three of the game for the first lead change. Joli Daninger hit a three to put UND in the lead once more, but the Jackrabbits tied it and then took the lead seconds later.  Starting the second quarter, the teams traded points, but Leet scored a layup to put the Fighting Hawks within four as the quarter winded down. The Jackrabbits scored yet again to give them the five-point lead (28-23) as they headed into halftime. In the third quarter, the Jackrabbits went on a 7-0 run early. After a scoring drought, Claire Orth scored a jumper at 6:43 to keep the Fighting Hawks within ten points. UND continued to attack SDSU's defense, but they were unable to convert as SDSU went on an 11-0 run late in the third to put them up 52-34 headed into the fourth. The Fighting Hawks adjusted in the fourth quarter, and the teams traded baskets early. Towards the middle of the quarter, SDSU hit back-to-back threes and converted on a three-point play to give them a 9-0 run. UND continued to attack as Kacie Borowicz netted a jumper and secured a steal, which Olivia Lane converted to layup for a UND 4-0 run. Borowicz and Lane continued the run (10-0) with back-to-back baskets, but it was not enough to push them past the Jackrabbits. The Fighting Hawks fell to the Jackrabbits, 72-54. Kacie Borowicz led the Fighting Hawks 14 points. She secured seven rebounds and had five assists. Melissa Leet followed closely behind Borowicz with 13 points. She had five assists, two blocks, and two rebounds. The Fighting Hawks shot 42.6 percent from the field, 9.1 percent from beyond the arch, and 87.5 percent from the line. While the Jackrabbits shot 41.4 percent from the field, 41.7 percent from beyond the arch, and 73.7 percent from the line.

ALL-TIME WITH NEBRASKA-OMAHA

The University of North Dakota leads Nebraska-Omaha in the series, 53-11. The last time that the two teams played each other was on Feb. 20, 2021. The Fighting Hawks fell 72-75 to the Mavericks at Baxter Arena.

OFF THE BENCH

The Fighting Hawks have averaged double-digits off the bench in their last two games. The bench scored 14 points against the University of South Dakota. The bench continued to be a factor as they scored 18 points against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits.

BOROWICZ FROM THE LINE

Kacie Borowicz leads the Fighting Hawks from the free-throw line this season with a .977 free-throw percentage. This percentage (97.73) has led her to become the leader across the NCAA Division I. She is only a few percentage points ahead of Fresno State's Haley Cavinder who sits at a 97.67 free-throw percentage. Borowicz has made 43 of 44 free-throws this season, while Cavinder has made 42-43. Borowicz broke the single-game record for most made in a game at UND with her 20-20 against Montana State.

 

SCOUTING NEBRASKA-OMAHA

Nebraska-Omaha enters the game with a 5-7 overall record and a 1-2 conference record. The Mavericks opened their season on the road against the No. 12 Iowa State Cyclones with a loss of 38-65. They continued on the road with a loss to Creighton (51-71), a loss to Kansas (56-81), a loss to Weber State (45-59) and then a win over UIC (70-58).  The Mavericks held their first home game on Dec. 2 against Tennessee State, which they won (67-56). The home games continued with a win against Saint Mary of Omaha (87-57), a loss to Kansas State (56-87), and a win against Northern Colorado (48-41). Their first conference game was against St. Thomas, who fell to the Mavericks, 61-55. Nebraska-Omaha then traveled to Western Illinois where they fell 70-77. Their third conference game against Kansas City was canceled. They then went on to play Oral Roberts and fell 45-50.

Following Thursday evening's game, the University of North Dakota hosts the University of Denver on Saturday, Jan. 8. The tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
