Following a tightly contested opener against Marquette, the gritty North Dakota Fighting Hawks will hit the road for the first time in 2020 when they make a tour of Big Sky Country to take on Montana State and Montana on Dec. 6 and 7, respectively.
RECORD BREAKER
After setting a pair of records last season, team rebounds and individual free-throw percentage, the University of North Dakota set a school free-throw percentage record against Marquette on Nov. 29, hitting all 14 attempts.Â
On Dec. 29, 2009, in New Orleans, North Dakota went 10-of-10 from the free-throw line versus Long Island to set the previous record. While three players went to the line against LIU Â - Shyla Kuehl (2-2), Whitney Ledger (6-6), and Alys Hays (2-2) - five different Fighting Hawks -
Julia Fleecs (4-4),
Jaclyn Jarnot (3-3),
Maggie Manson (2-2)
Mikayla Reinke (3-3) and
Makayla Wallace (2-2) - went to the line versus the Golden Eagles.Â
UND went flawless at the free-throw line twice last season, making six attempts versus Illinois State on Nov. 24 and five attempts versus South Dakota State in The Summit League Tournament on March 7.
SCOUTING MONTANA STATE
Montana State will be opening its season versus the Fighting Hawks on Sunday after finishing its 2019-20 campaign with a 25-6 record, advancing to the Big Sky Tournament Championship before the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the tournament. Like UND, MSU's season-opener for Nov. 25 was canceled, forcing a delayed start to the season. The Bobcats own a 10-4 edge in the all-time series with a 7-0 advantage in Bozeman at Worthington Arena.
SCOUTING MONTANA
Montana opened its season on the road at Utah State on Nov. 25, falling to the Aggies, 81-74, after leading by 13 points halfway through the second quarter. The Lady Griz finished 17-13 last season, falling in the first round of the Big Sky Tournament to Northern Arizona, who battled with MSU in the Big Sky Semifinal in the penultimate game. Carmen Gfeller recorded 21 points and six rebounds in 24 minutes of action for Montana against the Aggies. The Lady Griz own a 9-8 advantage in the UND series with a 6-1 record in Missoula.Â
NEXT UP
UND will hit the road for Norfolk, Va., when it takes on Old Dominion on Friday, Dec. 11, before playing in Fargo against North Dakota State on Wednesday, Dec. 16.
