TOLEDO, Ohio –
Juliet Gordon logged her first career double-double off the bench for the University of North Dakota (0-6), who closed its non-conference season in Toledo (5-1) on Monday afternoon. While outscoring the Rockets in the paint (26-16), second-chance efforts (14-5), and off the bench (25-6), the Fighting Hawks could not overcome UT's 11 three-pointers as they fell in their 2020 finale, 64-49.
Gordon finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and drew a game-best eight fouls, finishing 5-of-8 at the free-throw line.
Jaclyn Jarnot also scored in double figures, falling just two rebounds shy of a double-double with 10 points and eight boards. North Dakota also outrebounded Toledo, 47-36.
The University of North Dakota, who attacked the basket and drew 24 Rocket fouls to 18 Hawk fouls, could not take advantage in their 22 trips to the line, going 12-for-22 (.545) at the stripe. The stiff rims at Savage Arena also limited UND from the field as it shot 17-of-58, making three of their 18 attempts behind the three-point line.
After falling behind by 15 points early in the second period, UND closed the final 6:46 of the opening half on a 10-2 run, causing four turnovers and forcing the Rockets to finish 1-of-8 from the field in that span. The Fighting Hawks, who entered the final seven minutes with seven turnovers, only committed three giveaways in that timeframe.
The offensive glass was the Fighting Hawks best friend in the first half, crashing seven boards and scoring seven points on second-chance opportunities. Gordon, who scored one of the second chance efforts and assisted another, closed the half with nine points to lead UND.
Toledo responded in the second half, limiting the Fighting Hawks to 1-of-12 from the field in the period. While the Rockets took that momentum to build a 24-point advantage, UND stormed back and again closed the half on a 10-2 run to shave its deficit to 14 points in the final minutes of the game.
UND will return to action on Jan. 2, 2021, when it hosts Kansas City at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in the Hawks Summit League opener. It will be the first of two games with the Kangaroos on the weekend.
