GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of North Dakota dropped its Summit League opener on Saturday as the Fighting Hawks (0-7, 0-1 Summit) overpowered the fast-paced Kansas City (4-3, 1-0 Summit) ball club in the opening half. However, depth proved to be the difference as the Roos pace allowed KC to slip by UND in overtime, 71-67.
Three Hawks recorded double-doubles as starters
Julia Fleecs,
Jaclyn Jarnot, and
Megan Zander all recorded the feat, paced by Fleecs' 19 points and Jarnot's 13 rebounds. Jarnot's most impressive number of the afternoon was 45 as the junior played in all 45 minutes against the Roos alongside
Maggie Manson.
UND built a 17-point lead in the second quarter thanks to a 9-0 run that included three-straight baskets by Zander. The Hawks were 12-of-27 (.444) from the field in the half, and its aggressive play resulted in 11 trips to the free-throw line, where they made nine shots. Determination also played a part as North Dakota outscored the Roos 11-3 in second-chance opportunities in the first 20 minutes.
KC climbed out from their deficit thanks to timely shooting and UND misfires, making it a one-point ball game with 54 seconds left in the third quarter. North Dakota's resiliency overcame the threat as Fleecs knocked down a pair of free throws with 33 seconds to make it a three-point game entering the period.
In the final 10 minutes of regulation, the Fighting Hawks and Roos exchanged eight leads and tied the game five times. When UND took a 59-58 lead with 43 seconds remaining, KC countered with one free-throw to tie the game. The Hawks were given one last chance to break the tie with 0.5 seconds left, but an official video review deemed that time had expired, and UND would play its second overtime game in the last three outings. While North Dakota continued its charge, the Roos 7-1 run to start overtime proved too much for UND.
The University of North Dakota will return next weekend when it heads to Tulsa, Okla., on Jan. 8 and 9 to take on Oral Roberts.
