ON TAPÂ
In an ever changing college basketball landscape, the University of North Dakota women's basketball program will host Marquette at The Betty Engelstad Sioux Center on Sunday, Nov. 29.Â
A FAMILIAR FACE IN A NEW ROLEÂ
For over a decade
Mallory Bernhard,
formerly Youngblut in her Fighting Sioux days (2006-11), has been synonymous with the women's basketball program at the University of North Dakota. Â
After sitting on the bench next to former Head Coach
Travis Brewster for seven seasons, Bernhard will make her head coaching for debut for UND. She will be the first North Dakota graduate to coach the program in its recorded history (since 1974). Â
Bernhard's previous head coaching experience was from 2011-13 at her alma mater Davenport Assumption High School, leading the program to a pair of 3A State Championships in Iowa. Â
As assistant and associate head coach at UND, Bernhard helped the program to four postseason appearances, including the 2014 NCAA Tournament, a Big Sky Tournament Championship and Big Sky Regular Season Championship in 2017.
SCOUTING MARQUETTEÂ
Marquette will also open its season on Sunday, and begin year No. 2 under Head Coach Megan Duffy, the 2020 BIG EASTÂ Coach of the Year. The Golden Eagles finished second in the Conference with a 13-5 record with a 24-8 overall record. The Golden Eagles return three of its five starters from last season, including First Team All-BIG EASTÂ selection Selena Lott.Â
NEXT UPÂ
The University of North Dakota will return to action next weekend in a Big Sky Conference reunion tour at Montana State and Montana. The Fighting Hawks will take on the Bobcats on Sunday, Dec. 6 and follow up with the Lady Griz on Monday, Dec. 7.Â
