GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota women's basketball team picked up its seventh-straight win, with a 72-69 victory over Eastern Washington on Thursday at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
UND (12-11, 8-4 BSC) moves above the .500 mark for the first-time this season as the Fighting Hawks pick up their seventh-straight win to tie for most in Travis Brewster's tenure.
Senior Mia Loyd led UND with 18 points and 10 rebounds for her 33rd career double-double and eighth of the season.
UND also had three others in double-figures as Makailah Dyer (13), Klabo (10), and Szabla (10) all scored in double figures for the Fighting Hawks.
In a game where neither side could take a large lead, UND was able to use a fourth-quarter surge to claim the win. At one point, league-leading EWU (16-8, 10-2) erased a late third-quarter advantage with a quick 8-0 spurt in the early stages of the fourth quarter.
Big Sky scoring leader Hayley Hodgins helped her team to a lead as large as seven with things looking gloomy for UND to salvage a split in the season series. However, big minutes came from UND's freshmen with Fallyn Freije and Lexi Klabo each grabbing huge rebounds late and classmate Jill Morton grabbing a key steal in the final stages.
After a Hayley Hodgins three to make it a 63-60 Eagle lead with 3:38 to go. On the next trip, Klabo powered in a layup and then Morton made a pair of free throws to surge UND back in front.
The score swung back in favor of EWU two more times, but after each occasion, North Dakota had the answer. Leah Szabla split a pair from the chairty stripe with 1:18 to play for a 67-67 score.
After a missed three, Klabo skied up among traffic and grabbed a huge offensive rebound and scored with 32 seconds left with UND up two. A Freije three made it a three-point game then Morton swiped the ball out of Tisha Phillips' hands to all but seal it for North Dakota's seventh straight win.
Klabo matched her career high (set last Saturday) with eight rebounds in the win.
The Hodgins sisters combined for 45 of Eastern's 69 points in the loss. Hayley had 27 on 10-of-23 shooting while Delaney Hodgins added 18 on 6-of-16 from the floor.
UND hosts Idaho, who lost in overtime at Northern Colorado Thursday, on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Betty. North Dakota will honor its two seniors (Loyd, Kelsey Knox).
Notes: North Dakota moves to 9-2 at home this season ... UND has now won eight of their last nine games ... Loyd is now 24 points shy of current assistant coach Mallory Bernhard for 15th all-time in the UND scoring list.
