GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Powered by a season-high 11 three-pointers, the University of North Dakota women's basketball team flew past San Francisco, 71-63, Saturday afternoon at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in non-conference play. UND (2-4) out-scored the Dons, 28-11, in the final quarter to secure the win.
The new-look UND offense was cranking on all cylinders in that fourth quarter as the home team erased a 13-point third-quarter deficit with solid perimeter shooting.
Bailey Strand had a pair of them to spark a quick 8-0 run in the third quarter then Makailah Dyer splashed in a few more in a crowd-fueled stretch in the fourth quarter as UND ended the game on a 17-2 run.
It was a tight game in the first half as the teams played to six tie scores and the lead changed hands four times before San Francisco (4-4) landed a 30-26 advantage the break.
In the third, the Dons quickly padded its lead to 13 by scoring 12 of the first 15 points in the frame for its largest lead. Strand started that 8-0 spurt with a three and book-ended it less than a minute later to watch the deficit slim to five.
USF immediately countered to make it another double-digit lead with two minutes and change remaining in the third quarter at 50-39. From there, however, North Dakota would outscore the Dons, 32-13, the rest of the way.
But, most of the damage came in the final five minutes. In fact, it was still a 10-point lead for USF with 7:09 left. Leah Szabla hit a three and followed with a layup to start the late surge.
Dyer hit a three to make it a one-possession game to pump up the home crowd. They nearly became unglued a few moments later when she rattled in another long shot from the right wing and a 62-61 UND advantage. She'd hit another to help the Fighting Hawks run away with the victory.
