POCATELLO, Idaho-- Senior
Megan Lauck's four second-half threes helped North Dakota erase an 11-point deficit but Idaho State hung on for a 75-69 win in Big Sky Conference action Saturday. The loss halted UND's four-game win streak.
"We came out of the blocks slow on both sides of the basketball," UND head coach
Travis Brewster said. "When we push tempo in control, that's when we give ourselves a chance offensively . However, the reason we got back into it was because of our defensive effort. ISU mixed up its defenses and made timely shots when we made mistakes. Time to dig in and get tougher, we are at the halfway point in the conference."
Lauck finished the night with 20 points to lead UND with 14 of those coming after the break. North Dakota led at halftime by a point thanks to a 7-0 run to end the first half but ISU (11-10, 6-4) held UND to a drought from the floor for several minutes midway through the second frame to build a double-digit advantage.
It was
Emily Evers who was the spark plug early for North Dakota, scoring the first six North Dakota points and had eight points in the opening 7:07 as UND opened a quick five-point edge. With the score 20-16 North Dakota, the home team forced UND into turnovers on four consecutive possessions to help claim it s first lead.
The Bengal margin pushed to six before UND went on a 7-0 run to end the frame and get into the locker room with a 32-31 lead.
The first three of the game, a make by ISU's Rebecca Shrimpsher pushed the Bengals back in front, 38-36. UND had just one field goal, a layup by
Samantha Roscoe, in a nearly 11-minute span as the Bengals roared out to an 11-point lead. North Dakota battled its way to the free throw to slice into the deficit then got the big Lauck threes to get back into the ballgame.
Her first make came with just over eight minutes left to close it to a half dozen. Later, she'd make triples on back-to-back trips as UND inched with three at 59-56. Apiphany Woods, who led all scorers with 23, answered on each occasion, to help keep UND at arm's length.
Lauck's fourth three came at the 3:54 mark, giving her 12 points in just over four minutes as the deficit skinnied to just two.
Mia Loyd's power move underneath tied the score at 63-63 with 2:38 to go.
Woods again countered with a bucket and Jasmine Lemon drained a three to keep ISU on top for good to halt UND winning streak at four. Lemon finished the night with a game-high nine rebounds for Idaho State.
UND had four players in double digits with Loyd adding 14, Evers 13 and
Leah Szabla 10 in the loss. Roscoe chipped-in a career-best six points for the visitors.
North Dakota (14-7, 6-3) will host Southern Utah Thursday at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
