No. 20 Iowa State downs UND 84-55 in opener

AMES, Iowa-- Host 20th-ranked Iowa State used a pair of runs to distance itself and defeat North Dakota, 84-55 Sunday afternoon at the Hilton Center. UND led 13-12 midway through the first half, but ISU answered with a 13-2 run then later outscored UND, 20-3, spanning the end of the first half and into the opening minutes of the second frame.

ISU (1-0) was led by Hallie Christofferson's 32 points and 11 rebounds. UND played much of the second half in foul trouble as three different players had four personal fouls (Leah Szabla, Mia Loyd, Allyssa Wall).

"It was a good learning experience for us," UND head coach Travis Brewster said. "If you look at where we're at versus this time last year, it's a drastic difference. We need to figure out how to get more scoring from our posts and take advantage of our height."

It was a tight game in the first half as North Dakota led 13-12 on Madi Buck's trip, part of her team-high 16 points. Back-to-back threes from Kidd Blaskowski put ISU back in front to kickstart the first of the lengthy runs.

North Dakota battled to get it back within three on several different occasions but the Cyclones scored 12 of the final 15 points in the opening half on the way to their 71st consecutive non-conference home win.

Buck, who made her first five shots from the floor en route to 16 points. Megan Lauck added 13 while Loyd contributed eight points and 10 rebounds.

North Dakota remains on the road and heads to Northern Iowa for a 7:00 p.m. Tuesday tip.

Notes: Five players made their UND debuts as Leah Szabla, Ellen Kiser, Samantha Roscoe, Kelsey Knox and Ellie Ripplinger each played in their first regular season game ... Iowa State is ranked 20th in the USA Today preseason poll and 23rd in the Associated Press poll.
