GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The North Dakota volleyball team lost to UTSA (25-14, 25-18, 25-13) on Thursday night from the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. UND drops to 0-6, while UTSA improves to 3-4.
The match overall saw 15 ties and seven lead changes, headlined by set two with 13 ties and seven lead changes. The Hawks were led offensively by
Paige Barber and
Vanessa Washington, who combined for nine of the teams 14 kills on the evening. Defensively,
Olivia Edlund,
Marianna Rivera and Washington each had two total blocks, along with
Izzie McCormick who had a team high eight digs.
Set one showcased a 1-1 start to open the frame, but the Roadrunners went on a 6-0 burst to go up 7-1, forcing head coach
Jesse Tupac to burn a timeout. UND was able to cut the score to 9-5, before a 10-1 UTSA run to go up 19-6. The Roadrunners took set one by a score of 25-14.
Set two was the Hawks best set of volleyball, as they captured a team set best, six kills. With 13 ties and seven lead changes, UND owned leads of 1-0, 4-3, 5-4, 8-7, 15-13 and 16-15. Leading by as many as two, The Green and White surrendered a 10-2 run to end the set, falling 25-18.
North Dakota never led in the third set and were trailing just 15-10 through 25 points of volleyball. The Roadrunners used a 10-3 run to end the match, winning set three by a 25-13 total.
Sadie White had a team high four digs in the set.
