THIBODAUX, La. -- The University of North Dakota soccer team saw its perfect start to the season come to an end on Sunday evening, dropping a 2-1 decision at Nicholls from the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex in Thibodaux, La.
The defeat drops the Fighting Hawks to 5-1-0 on the season as the opening month of the campaign comes to a close -- the five wins to start the season are the most in the Division I era for the program and the most in any month for a UND soccer team since March 2020.
North Dakota dominated in nearly every statistical category except the score, as the Fighting Hawks finished with a 28-5 shot advantage and had 11 shots on goal compared to just two for Nicholls. Despite that, it was Nicholls who took the early lead on a goal via a penalty kick in the 25th minute to take a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
The hosts opened the second half strong as well, doubling its lead with a tally in the 47th minute to put UND down by multiple goals for the first time all season. UND pushed strong as the game wore on, eventually cutting the deficit to 2-1 on a penalty kick strike from
Paula Moreno Diaz for her first tally of the season in the 89th minute. The comeback effort fell short, however, as Nicholls handed the Hawks their first loss of the season.
North Dakota will return home to battle UC Santa Barbara on Thursday afternoon from Bronson Field.
