Fighting Hawks score six in season opener

LAKE CHARLES, La. – The North Dakota soccer team found the net early and often on Thursday night, using a balanced attack to power past McNeese, 6-0, at Cowgirl Field for season-opening shutout.

The Fighting Hawks (1-0-0) opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Amelia Loeffler finished a cross from Paula Moreno Diaz on the corner kick for her first goal of the year. UND doubled the advantage in the 37th minute as Charlie Basinet struck from close range off a feed from Cora Antonia Karen Ellermann, and Ellermann, with a header, made it 3-0 just before halftime, converting a setup from Jessica Machovec in the 43rd minute.

Less than four minutes into the second half, Yui Fujii added her first of the season with help from Sarah McCracken to stretch the lead to 4-0. Moreno Diaz joined the scoring in the 60th minute on an assist from Basinet before Machovec capped the night in the 77th minute, finishing a pass from Ellermann to secure the 6-0 final.

Defensively, UND limited McNeese to just seven total shots and two on frame, with goalkeeper Grace Miller making a pair of first-half saves before Sydney Bakritzes closed the final 13 minutes. 

The Fighting Hawks head to Prairie View A&M on Sunday, Aug. 18. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. with live coverage on FightingHawks.com and @UNDsoccer.

  • Offensively, the Hawks fired 23 shots, including 16 on target, and controlled 53% of possession despite playing on the road.
  • UND improves to 1-0-0 all-time against McNeese.

  • UND led shots 23-7 and shots on goal 10-2, despite the Cowgirls leading corner kicks 5-1.
