VERMILLION, S.D. – On the opening day of the USD Tune-Up, North Dakota captured five titles, recorded 11 top-three finishes and posted four upgrades to the UND top-10 list on Friday.
Kenna Curry won the shot put and broke her own school record with a personal-best toss of 53-8 1/4 (16.36m). Her previous record was 51-11 1/4 (15.83m), which she set at the Beach Invitational in California two weeks ago. With her PR, Curry now ranks No. 39 in the NCAA in the shot put and No. 25 in the NCAA West Region.
Earlier in the meet, Curry was also victorious in the discus and improved her No. 5 throw in program history with a PR of 172-2 (52.48m). She currently ranks No. 38 in the NCAA West Region with that throw.
Ethan Thomas was the final Hawk to compete at the meet and won the crown in the men's shot put with a toss of 61-0 1/4 (18.60m).
Eve Goldstein also placed in the women's shot put with Curry and took third with a throw of 46-8 3/4 (14.24m).
On the track, North Dakota made noise in its opening event and the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase not only involved a photo-finish with two Hawks fighting for the victory, but it also saw UND record the 1-2-3 sweep.
Louis-Lys Fanucchi edged out teammate
Henrik Lindstrot for the win, both clocking a time of 8:58.61. Fanucchi got the win and added his name to the UND top-10 list with the No. 3 time in program history.
Eric Weiss completed the 1-2-3 sweep for UND in the men's race, taking third in 9:31.13.
Jonas Weschle was victorious in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:03.67 in the men's competition. In the women's section, teammate
Rachel Hughes was the runner-up in 18:28.63.
Marta Marksa finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 60.63.
Kimberly Hitchen clocked a PR time of 62.19 and added her name to the UND top-10 list in the event with the No. 8 time in school history.
Ella Hedman was third in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:54.61.
