FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota concluded the Bison Open and won four titles at the meet on Friday. The Fighting Hawks also finished in the top-three on 20 occasions and recorded five upgrades to the UND top-10 list.
Ethan Thomas claimed two of the titles, winning the crown in both the discus (180-3, 54.94m) and the shot put (60-6 1/2, 18.45m). Teammate
Boaz Raderschadt also joined Thomas in the shot put and placed third with a personal-best throw of 51-0 3/4 (15.56m).
Kenna Curry and
Eve Goldstein continued the UND throwing dominance in the discus. Curry won the crown with a toss of 157-9 (48.08m), while Goldstein took third with a PR mark of 146-6 (44.67m).
Julia Matthews and
Katelyn Rath also finished in the top-three for the throwers. Matthews was the runner-up in the shot put and tied her personal-best mark with a distance of 45-4 1/4 (13.82m). Rath finished third with a PR of 43-6 (13.26m), bettering her previous best mark of 40-2 1/4 (12.25m).
Jory Vasek and the sprinters in the 400 meters had the lone 1-2-3 sweep for the Fighting Hawks at the meet. Vasek was victorious in 48.06, trailed by
P.K. Moore in second (49.37) and
Maverick Kneefe finishing third (49.74). Moore and Kneefe both recorded PRs with their times.
Malene Kollberg posted a pair of runner-up finishes and climbed the UND top-10 list in a pair of events. She finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.02. Then, she took second in the 200 meters with a personal-best time of 24.93, which bettered her No. 8 time on the UND top-10 list. Kollberg also improved her mark on the UND top-10 list in the long jump and had a leap of 19-9 3/4 (6.04m), which now ranks No. 3 in the event in UND history.
Kimberly Hitchen and
Emily Ash also had second-place finishes in their respective events. Hitchen was the runner-up in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 63.45, while Ash finished second in the pole vault with a height of 11-9 3/4 (3.60m).
Tiffanie Magnusson placed third in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 19-10 1/4 (6.05m) and moved up to No. 2 in school history. She also took third in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 14.64.
Cruz Megazzini finished third in the 200 meters and ran the No. 5 time in program history with a PR of 21.65.
Less than an hour earlier, it looked like Megazzini had ran the No. 8 time in school history in the 100 meters with a time of 10.76 and
Maxwell Roller also posted an upgrade to the UND top-10 list, tying the No. 10 time in school history with a PR of 10.79. By NCAA rule, these marks did not enter the UND top-10 list, as marks with over +4.0 meters/second are unofficial. The wind during Megazzini's heat was +4.2 meters/second and the wind during Roller's time was +5.4 meters/second.
Anya Williams recorded a third-place finish in the triple jump with a PR of 38-3 1/2 (11.67m). She moved up to No. 7 on the UND top-10 list with that jump.
Josh Neil was third in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 57.12.
Carter Byron was the first Fighting Hawk to place on Friday and was third in the javelin with a throw of 171-1 (52.16m).
North Dakota will resume its season in Vermillion at the USD Tune-Up this coming Friday and Saturday.
