OMAHA, Neb. – The University of North Dakota women's basketball team battled but ultimately fell to Omaha, 71-66, in the conference opener Thursday night at Baxter Arena. The loss moves the Fighting Hawks to 5-9 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.
North Dakota started strong in the first quarter, shooting 52.9% (9-of-17) from the field and staying within three points of Omaha, 28-25, at the end of the period.
Mikayla Aumer contributed five points, including a three-pointer, while
Jocelyn Schiller added five points and two rebounds.
Omaha pulled away in the second quarter, limiting UND to just four points on 18.2% shooting (2-of-11).
Kiera Pemberton and
Fatima Ibrahim each recorded two points for the Hawks.
The Fighting Hawks regrouped in the third quarter, with
Kiera Pemberton scoring four of her team-high 22 points during the period. Despite shooting an efficient 57.1% (4-of-7), turnovers plagued UND, allowing Omaha to extend their lead to 55-39 heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth, North Dakota rallied with 27 points, their highest-scoring quarter of the game. Pemberton and
Walker Demers each contributed key baskets, but Omaha held off the comeback.
The Fighting Hawks will head south to Kansas City to play the Roos on Saturday, January 4 at 1 p.m.

- Kiera Pemberton led all scorers with 22 points, shooting 8-of-15 from the field and 6-of-9 from the free-throw line, along with 13 rebounds for her fourth double-double.
- Jocelyn Schiller added 16 points, while Walker Demers chipped in 10 points and six rebounds.
- The Fighting Hawks led shot percentage 46.8% (22-of-47) compared to Omaha's 41.3% (26-of-63).
- UND struggled from three-point range shooting 18.8% (3-of-16) to the Mavericks' 31.8% (7-of-22).
- NoDak had a dominant presence on the free throw line going 73.1% (19-of-26) compared to UNO's 63.2% (12-of-19).
- North Dakota outrebounded Omaha 37-32 but committed 29 turnovers compared to the Mavericks' 20.
