NEW ORLEANS, La. - Despite a 42-percent field goal percentage, three players in double figures, and a 21-point, 10-rebound performance by
Olivia Lane, the University of North Dakota (9-4) dropped its final non-conference game at the University of New Orleans (4-7) at Lakefront Arena, 79-73.
UNO's Rehema Franklin scored a game-high 33 points as the Privateers shot 51-percent from the field. Lane's 21 points were a new career-high in her second career double-double while classmate
Megan Zander equaled her career-high 18 points with four three-pointers.
Kacie Borowicz dished a career-high and UND season-high eight assists while scoring 11 points.
"You can't spot anyone any points, and we spotted New Orleans today," said Head Coach
Travis Brewster. "Our upperclassmen had a chance to get after it, and they couldn't get it rolling, so we went with the younger group. The biggest thing that I noticed when you look at the stat sheet itself is only 15 assists. We didn't share enough of the basketball.
"
Olivia Lane came in and did her job. I thought
Kacie Borowicz did a nice job of giving us a lift, and
Megan Zander came in and did her job as well, but it all comes down to execution and playing together," Brewster added.
New Orleans pressed North Dakota right out of the gate and quickly found itself in control of the Fighting Hawks the entire first quarter. With Borowicz providing the spark running the UND offense - tallying four assists in the quarter - Zander was the Hawks top-scorer with eight points with a perfect field goal percentage, including two three-pointers.
While the teams traded leads and baskets in the opening four minutes of the quarter, the Privateers ended the half on an 11-1 run to lead 36-28 at the half.
Borowicz ran the offense with efficiency, scoring four points and dishing five assists. The North Dakota post players accounted for 21 of the team's 28 points with Zander pacing the Hawks with nine and
Olivia Lane adding seven.
Julia Fleecs added four points as well.
The third quarter was all Lane as she led UND's 8-2 run with four baskets in the paint to lift her scoring tally to 15 and make it a two-point game in the opening two minutes of the half, 38-36.
Zander surged back late in the third and at the start of the fourth quarter, tying her career-high with 18 points with her third and fourth three-pointers of the day. While North Dakota stayed within two possessions late in the fourth, Franklin continued to lead New Orleans as she finished the quarter with 11 points.
UND will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 1, when it heads to Denver to take on the University of Denver in the Fighting Hawks Summit League opener.
