Thrilling double-overtime win concludes non-league slate

DELAND, Fla.-- North Dakota played without four starters in double overtime but emerged victorious, 100-97, over San Francisco to finish the non-conference slate Friday in the finale of the Hatter Classic at Stetson University. Lexi Klabo, Faith Dooley, Jill Morton and Bailey Strand had all fouled out in the second extra session but a big three by sophomore Julia Fleecs helped boost the Fighting Hawks to the win.

Klabo had 28 points, eight rebounds and five blocks before her fifth foul, earning an All-Hatter Classic Tournament nod. Strand poured in a career-high 21 points in the win to give North Dakota (5-8) back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

"I was proud of these ladies, they've made big strides since the beginning of the year." UND head coach Travis Brewster said. "I thought our seniors did a good job showing some composure, then their roles got reversed and they were on the bench and continued to stay in it. Heck of a game-- what a way to go out here before we go and break and into the conference schedule."

The finish of regulation and each overtime came with plenty of drama. Late in regulation, Shannon Powell drove and finished around the rim with under two seconds to go to force the first extra frame. The shot was set up by Lexi Klabo, who is an 85 percent free thrower, missed a pair of freebies with 16 seconds left and UND leading by two.

In the first extra period, Moa Lundqvist missed the back end of a pair of free throws with 33 seconds left and Powell's last-second heave was off the mark to send it to another extra frame. Klabo picked up back-to-back fouls with just under two minutes remaining in the first overtime and the onus was on the Fighting Hawk underclassmen to get the game to the finish line.

The second overtime saw USF take a three-point lead before UND ripped off six straight points to wrestle away control. It started with a Claire Orth conventional three-point play and then Fleecs' late-in-the-shotclock three on the right wing for a huge momentum changing play. With the game tied at 96-96, Fleecs converted a baseline inbounds pass into a quick bucket and seven seconds to go.

But, a quick foul provided an opportunity for San Francisco to tie the score at the free throw line with just six seconds remaining. Powell made the first but was unable to take the second due to a lane violation and North Dakota hit its final free throws to emerge with its first double-overtime win since 1989.

The win came after North Dakota allowed USF to pile up an 11-point first-quarter lead and turned the ball over 18 times in the first half. The Dons converted those turnovers in 20 of their 34 points at the break, but went scoreless for a nearly seven minute stretch in the second to watch a once 13-point lead evaporate down to four at halftime with just seven second-quarter points.

Three UND players finished with double-figure point totals with Klabo scoring 28, Strand 21 and Melissa Dailey adding 11.

UND opens Summit League play Dec. 30 against Purdue Ft. Wayne for a 1:00 p.m. tip at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
