Tyler Wells joined UND on Oct. 1, 2021, and serves as the Athletic Communications Director for football, cross country and track & field.
Wells is entering his fifth year as the communications director for football, cross country and track & field in 2025-26. He also spent two years as the men's basketball and volleyball contact and one year with soccer. In March of 2023, Wells also served as the Assistant Media Coordinator for the NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Regional in Fargo. He was also responsible for researching, nominating and helping Jim Kleinsasser get into the 2025 National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame, making Kleinsasser just the second UND football player in history to earn the honor.
Prior to UND, Wells spent the 2020-21 season a freelance statistician for the Big Ten Network for volleyball, football and both men’s and women’s basketball. Before that, he was the 2018-19 and 2019-20 intern in athletic communications at the University of Nebraska, serving as the primary contact for cross country, bowling and track & field, while also working as the host contact for USA Wrestling’s 2019 Final X: Lincoln. As an intern at Nebraska, Wells oversaw 12 student contacts.
In 2016, Wells moved to Sioux City, Iowa, to pursue a master’s degree in Sports Management at Briar Cliff University and was the first-ever graduate assistant in the BCU sports information department. As a graduate assistant, Wells was the assistant sports information director and oversaw all 18 varsity sports at the Cliff, while also serving two stints as the interim sports information director.
Before Briar Cliff, Wells was an undergraduate at Wayne State College and was a student-assistant in the Wildcats’ sports information department from 2012-2015. Upon graduation from WSC, Wells served as a volunteer intern in communications at the University of Nebraska from January 2015 until December 2015. From November 2015 until March 2016, he was a Stat Crew statistician for the Nebraska basketball teams, while also volunteering at various home events.
From 2015 to 2020, Wells was a freelance statistician and time out coordinator for the Big Ten Network, ESPN and Fox Sports. He was also one of the primary statisticians for the 2016 and 2017 NAIA Division II Women’s Volleyball National Championship tournaments and the 2016-17 and 2017-2018 NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship tournaments. While at Nebraska in 2015 as a volunteer assistant, he was a member of the support staff for the 2015 NCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship tournament and served as a locker room liaison following the National Title match.
A native of Norfolk, Neb., Wells earned his bachelor's degree in Sport Management from Wayne State College in 2015 and his master's degree in Sports Management from Briar Cliff University in 2018.
