Steve Westereng, PhD, ATC, CSCS

Dr. Steve Westereng is the Chair of the Department of Sports Medicine within the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences. The UND Department of Sports Medicine oversees the health care and human performance of the UND student-athletes. 

Steve graduated from UND in 1994 with a degree in Athletic Training. After graduating from UND, he was an assistant athletic trainer with the Philadelphia Eagles for the 1994 season. He then pursued a master's degree in Kinesiology from the University of Minnesota as well as worked as an athletic trainer with the University of Minnesota Athletic Department between 1995 and 1997.  Steve then worked for the Institute for Athletic Medicine in the Twin Cities and served as the head athletic trainer at Osseo (Minn.) High School

Steve began as an assistant athletic trainer/instructor within UND's Department of Sports Medicine in March of 1999 and took on overseeing the Department of Sports Medicine in 2003. Steve completed his doctoral degree in Higher Education from the College of Education at UND in November of 2019.   

A native of Minot, Westereng and his wife, Becky, have a daughter, Madeline, and two sons, Gavin and Torrey.
